Asparagus densiflorous (also called Springeri Fern) is a perennial (hardy in Zones 9b-11) used in landscape, combination planters and standalone containers. Though not a true fern (it's really a member of the lily family), its upright, sprawling habit and finely textured, evergreen foliage make it an interesting plant to add diversity to your garden center selections. A native to southern Africa, Springeri Fern handles drought very well. These fast-growing plants can spread 3-4 feet and reach heights of 1-2 feet. As the branches get longer, they will cascade due to their own weight and can be trained to flow over a wall or container.
General Growing Tips For Your Seedling Tray
For best results with Asparagus Fern, we recommend using a constant feed program of 150-200 ppm N.Springeri are drought resistant, so grow them a little on the dry side in a well-drained soil. Maintain a pH between 5.8 - 6.2.
Pinching
Springeri do not require pinching. Trimming or clipping an overgrown pot may be useful in maintaining its shape.
Spacing
Space pots as needed to allow air flow and penetration of light between plants.
Height Control
Plant growth regulators are not recommended for Asparagus Fern. Clipping may be useful in maintaining the proper height on your final product.
Pests
Aphids, mites, and occasionally whiteflies are the biggest pest problems for Springeri.
Disease
Asparagus (Sprengeri) Fern is not prone to many diseases, but don't oversaturate the soil. If the plant sits in moist soil for an extended amount of time, you could end up with root rot or botrytis. Botrytis grey rot is usually associated with wet or humid conditions. You can prevent botrytis by allowing the plant to dry out between waterings, allowing for good airflow in your greenhouse, and spacing to allow the sun to penetrate to the soil level. The most common chemicals used to treat botrytis and root rot are Medallion and Banrot. Use them as a drench according to each label's instructions.
Planting Asparagus (Sprengeri) Fern Liners
We recommend planting 4-5 starter plants per 10 inch basket. Use a well-drained soil in your baskets and plant your starter plants deep, allowing the ellepot to be completely covered by the soil. If you are planting 4" pots, 3 plant per pot should be sufficient. Plant them directly in the middle of your pot in a triangle formation.
Pinching is not recommended, but clipping may be useful in maintaining the proper height on your finished product.
Rooted Cuttings
Cuttings vary in size between different plant families. These rooted starter plants will arrive ready to be transplanted in to your final container. If they are to be used in a landscape application, you will need to establish them in a 4 inch pot or an 1801 before planting outside.

Before we take this relationship any further...
It looks like this is the first time you've added anything to your cart.
We just wanted to remind you that we are a wholesale starter plant company that sells to businesses, schools, clubs, and other non-profits. State law dictates that you must be growing for resale to order from us since we are not collecting sales tax.
If we aren't a match, we understand. It's not you, it's us.
We would look awful in orange jumpsuits.
