Cleome (Clio) Magenta is native to South America. Our cultivar is part of the Danziger breeding program. This annual is a sun lover and functions really well as an outdoor plant in warm-weather climates, attracting both hummingbirds and butterflies. In a landscape application, it is normally used as a border or edge crop and provides a great ground cover. It is also ideal in a floor pot or combination planter for retail sales. It has excellent branching and a strong, upright structure. With long and continuous flowering and great garden performance, this is an excellent plant to add to your spring collection.
General Growing Tips For Your Rooted Cutting Liner
For best results with Cleome, use a constant feed program of 200-300 ppm N. Maintain a pH between 5.7- 6.3 and an EC level between 1-2.
Flowering
Cleome Magenta will naturally flower as the days get longer in the spring and will continue into the summer and fall.
Pinching
We recommend pinching your newly-planted starters about 5-10 days after they are planted and established in their final container. For a larger pot, we recommend pinching twice.
Spacing
While Cleome is known as an upright plant, it also tends to spread as it grows. A 10-inch pot would need to be spaced at 2 feet centered. Larger pots will need more room as the plants develop.
Height Control
Plant growth regulators are not necessary for Cleome Magenta. Grow them at bright levels of light to keep them stocky and healthy looking. Lower levels of light will produce stringy growth. We recommend sun to partial shade with high levels of light (min 6,000 FC / 60,000 LUX).
Pests
Whiteflies and aphids are Cleome's biggest pests.
Disease
Cleome Magenta will develop oedema (a build-up of fluid in the plant tissue) if you over-water. Keep the soil moist, but allow it to dry between waterings.
Root rot is another problem to watch out for. Prevention is your best approach. Use heat-pasteurized potting mix (heated to 180F and held for 30 min. Longer times kill beneficial organisms in the soil). Disinfect bench surfaces, pots and equipment and make sure your water source is clean. If root rot is suspected, apply fungicide or a biological control agent as early in the crop cycle as possible.
Planting Cleome Clio Magenta Liners
We recommend planting 3 starter plants per 10 inch basket. Use a well-drained soil in your baskets and plant your starter plants deep, allowing the ellepot to be completely covered by the soil. If you are planting 4" or 5" pots, 1 plant per pot should be sufficient. Plant it directly in the middle of your pot.
Pinch your starter plants 5-10 days after transplanting, once the plants are established. Large pots may need a second pinch.
Rooted Cuttings
Cuttings vary in size between different plant families. These rooted starter plants will arrive ready to be transplanted in to your final container. If they are to be used in a landscape application, you will need to establish them in a 4 inch pot or an 1801 before planting outside.

Before we take this relationship any further...
It looks like this is the first time you've added anything to your cart.
We just wanted to remind you that we are a wholesale starter plant company that sells to businesses, schools, clubs, and other non-profits. State law dictates that you must be growing for resale to order from us since we are not collecting sales tax.
If we aren't a match, we understand. It's not you, it's us.
We would look awful in orange jumpsuits.
