Erysimum Bowles Mauve (also known as Erysimum Linofolium, or Wallflower) is a flowering perennial native to southern Europe. Commonly grown in cottage gardens, Bowles Mauve performs well in borders, containers, and cottage landscapes. This plant has a shrubby upright habit of 18-24" tall, attracting butterflies to the garden with fragrant mauve blooms from spring to early summer. Drought tolerant and frost-hardy, Erysimum requires little more than occasional water and light pruning to flourish in full or partial sun. For an Erysimum variety with larger foliage and flowers, try Winter Joy Improved.
Sell Bowles Mauve to customers looking for a perennial flower to add to a cottage garden or container. Erysimum offers many benefits: it is frost hardy with evergreen foliage in zone 6-10 and drought-tolerant and low-maintenance in even the driest part of the garden. This plant adds color and visual interest to your customer's garden while attracting pollinators. Customers will love cheering up a large patio container with this attractive perennial, enjoying flowers through summer and foliage all year with little work. Bowles Mauve has a shrubby upright habit of 18-24" tall and 15-18" wide and pairs well with tulips, Artemesia, Calamintha, Lavender, and Echeveria.
Coach Your Customer
1. Use well-drained soil in a sunny or partly sunny location.
2. Lightly prune Erysimum after it flowers to encourage a dense habit.
3. Water regularly in extreme heat and during the first year as the plant establishes a healthy root system.
For best results with Bowles Mauve, plant one plug per 4-inch, 6-inch, or 1-gallon container. Use well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade, a pH of 5.7-6.2, and medium feed (200-300 ppm N). Bulk to about half the finished size in warm temperatures (65+) and then vernalize at cool temperatures (35-46) for 4-6 weeks. Grow under high light intensity. Apply Sumagic at 5 ppm during bulking, but do not pinch or use PGRs once bulking is complete. This plant may be affected by downy mildew and you may see slugs, snails, or flea beetles.
Four-inch pots take 5-6 weeks of bulking; 6-inch pots take 6-7 weeks of bulking; 1-gallon pots take 8-10 weeks of bulking. Each size container needs 4-6 weeks of vernalization after bulking.
Mauve flowers bloom from spring through summer.
We recommend one pinch during bulking or no pinch for this plant.
Space containers for adequate airflow and sunlight around the base and foliage of each plant.
Do not use PGRs after bulking. Sumagic at 5 ppm can prevent legginess during bulking.
You may see slugs, snails, or flea beetles.
This plant can be susceptible to powdery mildew. This fungus spreads in the air and is most likely in cool, humid weather. Treat when you first see the tell-tale powdery white spots appear or preventatively with a 2 ppm drench of Bonzi.
We recommend planting one rooted liner per container. Use well-drained soil and completely bury the ellepot in the center of the pot.
