Gaillardia Sunrita Burgundy Rooted Cutting Liner

For best results with Sunrita Burgundy, plant one rooted liner per 4-inch container, one or two per 6-inch container, or three per 10-inch container. Use a well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0-6.3, EC of 2.0-2.5 (SME), temperatures of 70-75 daytime and 65-68 nighttime, and medium feed (200-225 ppm N) with clear water every fifth irrigation. Maintain light at 4,000-6,000 fc and provide daylight extension to 13+ hours. Pinch once, 15-20 days after transplant. Use a spray or drench of Bonzi if needed. Watch for aphids, spider mites, thrips, botrytis, and root rot.

Gaillardia Aristata varieties can be susceptible to powdery mildew, aster yellows, and fungal leaf spot. Powdery mildew is unlikely to cause the plant to die. This fungus causes a grayish powder on the surface of leaves, and can be treated by removing affected plant parts and using a preventative fungicide.

Aster yellows is a virus passed to plants by an insect called the Aster Leafhopper. The main symptom of Aster yellows is yellowing of leaves while they maintain their green veins. You may also see slowed growth, curled leaves, and deformed flowers. The disease is incurable. The main method of dealing with it is to remove and destroy infected plants, and to control insects and weeds close to susceptible plants. Dandelion and plantain are especially known to harbor Aster Yellows.

Fungal leaf spot should not present a major problem, as it usually only causes cosmetic blemishes on plant foliage; this broad group of plant disease appears as small brownish lesions on plant leaves or flowers. It can be prevented by providing sufficient airflow, keeping plants away from standing water, and watering at the base of the plant. A fungicide can be used to treat leaf spot if the integrity of the plant will be damaged.

Prevent Botrytis and root rot in your greenhouse by watering at the base of each plant in the morning, allowing the soil to dry between waterings, providing good airflow, and spacing containers so sunlight can reach the soil level of each plant.
