Herbstii Brilliantisima, also known as Bloodleaf and Beefsteak Plant, is a tender perennial foliage plant native to Brazil. This variety offers a shrubby, spreading, upright habit of 12-36" tall and wide, reaching as much as 5' tall in its native climate. Ovate foliage is dark green and purple with hot pink veining, blushing to magenta in full sun. This plant is heat and shade tolerant, requiring little more than a mostly sunny location and regular water to thrive in annual borders and containers in any region. Perennial in zone 10-12, Brilliantisima grows well annually or as a houseplant in cold climates.
Sell Herbstii Brilliantisima to customers looking for attractive foliage to add to a mixed container, landscape border, or houseplant collection. This plant also excels in tropical climates as a short-lived tender perennial or flourishes as a houseplant with regular water and a sunny window. Customers and hummingbirds love the bright, variegated foliage in a sunny patio container or partly shady border. Create a striking tropical garden by pairing this plant with Bird of Paradise, Painted Abutilon, and Zebra Mallow. This plant isn't prone to disease but powdery mildew can develop during cool, humid weather. Powdery mildew is an airborne fungus that appears as white spots on leaves and causes foliage to turn brown and die off. Prevent disease in your greenhouse with a fungicide and by providing good airflow, watering at the base of each plant and allowing the soil to dry between watering, and spacing containers so sunlight can reach the base and foliage of each plant.
We recommend planting one rooted plug per 4-inch container, two or three per 6-inch container, and four or five per 10-inch container. Use a well-drained soil and completely bury the ellepots evenly spaced in the container.
