Lobelia Glow, also known as Lobelia erinus 'Glow', is an annual flowering plant native to Southern Africa. Danziger developed the Glow cultivar for larger blooms, better heat performance, and a superior mounded habit. Lobelia Glow has a compact mounded habit of 8-10" tall and 12-14" wide with unique blue flowers that bloom from spring until frost. Glow Azure offers heat tolerance and early flowering and attracts butterflies. Lobelia flourishes in sunny landscape borders, mass plantings, and containers with little more than regular water. For hanging baskets or a cascading element in a mixed container, try Midnight Blue.
Glow Azure Selling Tips
Sell Glow Azure to customers looking for low-maintenance annual landscape or container plants. This plant has many benefits to offer, from early flowering to superior heat tolerance. With little more than regular water, Lobelia attracts butterflies to the landscape with beautiful blue blooms all season. Each flower is small, but the overall impact of dark green foliage covered in blue flowers is eye-catching in containers, edges, or landscape borders. Lobelia advances the cottage garden and flourishes in any sunny location. For a stunning mix of color and texture, plant Lobelia Glow with Lysimachia, Dianthus, Pansy, and Diascia.
Coach Your Customer
1. Plant Lobelia in full sun in well-drained soil. Water regularly.
General Growing Tips For Your Rooted Cutting Liner
For best results with Glow Azure, use well-drained soil with low feed (100-150 ppm N), a pH of 5.6-6.2, and an EC of 1.0-1.2. Plant two or three rooted liners per 4-inch container or 5 plugs per 10-inch basket. Maintain temperatures between 65-68 degrees. This plant doesn't have major pest or disease problems, but does need full sun and regular water to thrive. You may see aphids, whiteflies, or thrips.
Flowering
Small blue flowers bloom from early spring until frost.
Pinching
We recommend that you first pinch Glow Azure 5-10 days after transplanting to your final container. Pinch early and soft to promote good basal branching.
Spacing
Lobelia should be spaced adequately to allow airflow and light penetration between the foliage. Usually 2’ centers on baskets will be enough.
Height Control
B-Nine, A-Rest and Bonzi have all been tested on Lobelia and are effective. In our experience, pinching is sufficient to create a well-shaped basket. If you decide to use PGRs, follow the label’s instructions. Danziger recommends a 2 ppm drench of Bonzi as needed to combat stretching.
Pests
Aphids, whiteflies and thrips are the primary pests attracted to Lobelia.
Disease
Glow Azure isn't disease prone but avoid oversaturating the soil. If the plant sits in moist soil at length, you could end up with root rot or botrytis. Botrytis grey rot tends to occur in wet or humid conditions. Take these steps to prevent botrytis: water in the morning and allow the plant to dry out between waterings; provide good airflow in your greenhouse; space plants so the sun can penetrate to the soil level. The most common chemicals used to treat botrytis are Medallion and Banrot. Use them as a drench according to each label’s instructions.
Planting Glow Azure Liners
- We recommend planting 5 starter plants per 10-inch basket. Use a well-drained soil in your baskets and plant your starter plants deep, completely covering the ellepot with the soil. If you are planting 4-inch pots, use 2-3 plants per pot. When using 3 starters, plant them in a triangle in the middle of your pot.
- Pinch Glow Azure 5-10 days after transplanting to your final container. Additional pinches every couple of weeks may be required to shape your final pot.
Rooted Cuttings
Cuttings vary in size between different plant families. These rooted starter plants will arrive ready to be transplanted in to your final container. If they are to be used in a landscape application, you will need to establish them in a 4 inch pot or an 1801 before planting outside.
